There are many reasons to buy a car from the US. US auctions can be as much as 50% lower than Lithuanian market prices. In addition, cars from the US are often much better equipped than vehicles made in Europe. There are also more advantages:
- The car is bought in USD to avoid currency fluctuations.
- The purchase is made by auction.
- Lower purchase price due to accidents.
- The car is purchased in instalments. The car and delivery costs are paid first and import taxes and repair costs will be paid later.
Not only can you find the model you want at a US auction, but you can also be sure that it was bought at a bargain price. To buy a car at a US auction, you need to follow these steps:
- Search auction sites such as iaai.com, www.copart.com, www.manheim.com, www.adesa.com, www.cars.com, www.ebay.com.
- Participating in the auction (we have mentioned that a deposit of 10%, which cannot be less than €500, is required, as well as signing a participation contract).
- Purchasing procedures to be carried out within 2 calendar days.
- Transportation of the purchased car to the loading bay.
- Preparation of documents for export.
- Loading the vehicle into a sea container and transporting it to the port of Klaipeda.
- Implementation of import procedures and delivery to the specified address in Lithuania.
- Car condition. It is important to assess how much the car will cost and the repairs needed to repair the damage.
- Seller. Dealers who are listed as an insurance company (e.g. State Farm Insurance, etc.) are less risky. In this case, it is less likely that the car has already been repaired or otherwise serviced after the accident before it is sold.
- Car documents. These must be in line with the laws in force in Lithuania.
- Mileage. Lower mileage means easier sale and low depreciation. In the US, mileage is calculated in miles (1 mile is 1.6 kilometres).
Cars arriving in Lithuania from the US are subject to specific requirements due to discrepancies in design and technical parameters. The EU has slightly different requirements, which are the same as the laws in force in Lithuania. Cars made here comply with EC (European Community) technical directives and can be registered without major problems. When a car arrives in a European country from the USA, it is subject to additional checks to make sure it meets the requirements and will be safe on the road.
The biggest problems are usually caused by the headlights. Not only do they vary in colour, but also in positioning and the area illuminated. To pass the roadworthiness test, the headlights must be replaced with European counterparts. We suggest that you have your vehicle inspected before you register your US car. This way you will know what needs to be replaced and you will not have to deal with any extra hassle during the inspection.
- Light signalling and design of lighting devices (arrangement, colour, lighting perimeter, etc.).
- Wheels and perimeter of wheel structure. It must meet the manufacturer’s requirements (M1 and N1).
- The car must comply with the ecological requirements in force at the time of first registration.
- The car must comply with the technical requirements.
The term RO (Roll-on Roll-off) is very important in the terminology of transport of vehicles. It refers to the rapid shipment of vehicles from the USA. There are dedicated port terminals in Baltimore (MD), Jacksonville (FL) and Galveston (TX), and smaller RO-RO terminals in Newark (NJ), Norfolk (VA), Charleston (SC), Savannah (GA), Miami (FL), Tampa (FL), Long Beach (CA) and Tacoma (WA). This way the cars are safely brought on board and secured on deck. Neither people nor their personal belongings can be in the car during transport, except for the car’s own production items: spare tyres, safety equipment, etc. Vehicles transported in this way must have intact windows and hulls, and must be free of mechanical breakdown sounds. If the car is not moving on its own, it will cost a little more to load it onto the ship.

- We transport cargo in 40′ Hight Cube, 40′ Dry Freight, 20′ Dry Freight containers.
- Shipment tracking. Every stage of the shipment is tracked using transport management systems. The cargo is monitored and coordinated in real time. This helps to determine whether everything is going as planned.
- Negotiation process. Freight forwarders negotiate with carriers the terms and conditions of the shipment. Negotiations not only involve agreeing on the conditions of transport, the timeframe, the weight of the cargo, etc., but also trying to reduce the cost of the service. This is why freight forwarding services not only help to obtain better conditions but also to reduce costs.
- Cargo insurance. Often the value of the cargo is very high, especially if the cargo is bulky, which is why it is worth taking out additional cargo insurance. This way you won’t suffer a large loss if your goods are damaged or stolen during transport.
